LASUED Chess Team Shines At The 2024 National Schools Chess Championship

The Lagos State University of Education Chess Team, participated alongside 50 other Universities in Nigeria, at the second edition of the National School Chess Championship held on 27th May, 2024 at the PAN African Center, Eco bank Headquarters.

The competition involves Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Institutions within the Country which LASUED students athletes performed exceptionally well.

LASUED star athletes in the competition were Olatunji Israel Oladotun (COITED), a 100 level student who won a total of four games, lost one, and drew one out of six rounds of games played.

In addition, Metose John (COITED) also a 100 level student of Computer Science won one game drew four and lost one amidst six games played. Meanwhile, Akintade Victoria, a 200 English student who was the only female in the LASUED Chess team, won a game, had three draws and lost two of the six games played.

Notably, Master Yusuf Opeyemi a Basic 5 pupil of the LASUED Staff School (primary section), won 13 of 14 games played.

Furthermore, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye said that Management will continue to encourage students of LASUED Staff School (LSS), LASUED International School (LIS) including Degree students of the institution to embrace sports as it will help them to be physically fit and active in the persue of their academic excellence as well enables them to exhibit their talents outside classroom learning. She made this assertion in her office while hosting a crop of LSS pupils who participated in the 2024 Chess Championship.

Lastly, the Director, Directorate of Sports, LASUED, Dr. Adeniyi Jimmy praised the Management under Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye led administration for the unwavering support towards sports in the University and solicited continued support for sports as the institution aimed to attain greater heights through sports.
