LASUED -Guidance and Counseling Equips Graduating Students with CV and Interview Skills for Career Readiness
The Directorate of Guidance and Counseling, in line with the University’s mandate to promote holistic student development, on Tuesday 21st April, 2026 organized a workshop on Curriculum Vitae (CV) writing and interview skills for 400-level students.
The event, held at the 300-seater hall of the Oto/Ijanikin Main Campus, was designed to prepare final-year students for leadership roles and professional engagement as they approach graduation.
Speaking at the workshop, the Director of the Directorate of Guidance and Counseling, Prof. Olubusayo Asikhia, appreciated the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, for her unwavering support, as well as all participants for their attendance. She noted that the transition from student life to the professional world is not automatic but highly competitive.
According to her, while a certificate serves as an entry ticket, a well-written CV opens doors of opportunity, and strong interview performance ultimately secures one’s future.
She explained that the workshop was particularly important for the institution’s pioneer graduating students, as it equips them with essential skills ahead of their entry into the labour market.
Prof. Asikhia further emphasized that employers are not only interested in academic qualifications but in clear evidence of value and competence. In a competitive labour market, a strong CV creates initial opportunities, while effective interview performance determines final success. Beyond the CV, interview performance plays a crucial role in securing employment.
She explained that candidates must prepare thoroughly by researching the organization and understanding the role, communicate confidently and professionally during the interview, and follow up afterward to reinforce interest and improve future performance.
She encouraged students to build confidence and maintain professionalism throughout the recruitment process.
Also speaking, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Dawodu R. A., urged students to pay close attention to the programme and ensure they apply the knowledge gained as they transits from students into the professional world.
The guest lecturer, Mr. Shehu Zubair, an Associate Partner in Human Capital and Senior Certified HR Professional, delivered a session on securing employment through effective CV writing and interview techniques.
He explained that many candidates fail at the early stage because their CVs are not aligned with job requirements, stressing the importance of tailoring each CV to specific roles.
He described the CV as a marketing tool that represents the candidate in their absence, noting that when it fails to communicate value effectively, it becomes a disadvantage.
He identified three types of CVs including functional, achievement-based, and combination formats and highlighted that employers consider skills such as technical competence, accountability, leadership, and time management alongside academic qualifications.
On interview performance, he noted that strong delivery helps candidates stand out among competitors, emphasizing that proper preparation, confident communication, and post-interview reflection are key to success.
