Director DGCCD

INTRODUCTION

Based on the Vision and Mission of the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), the Directorate of Guidance, Counselling and Career Development (DGCCD) attaches great importance to developing the individual competencies of each student to make them globally acceptable and outstanding. Thus, each student's personal goals and growth as the core of our practice provides students with personalized support.

This passion made the pioneer Director (Dr. Asikhia Olubusayo) seek approval for the creation of LASUED COUNSELLING CLINIC YouTube Channel which features short movies series and seminar presentations on socio-personal, educational and vocational issues to proffer solutions to students' (and other youth's) academic, socio-personal and career problems.

Guided by the code of ethics of the Psychology and Counselling professions, the Directorate ensures that every information given by clients is treated with privacy and confidentiality except when clients sign and approve the release of their information to a third party for further intervention.

Recognizing the existence of prejudice and discrimination which continue to marginalize and oppress people everywhere, we focus on ensuring that our clients feel safe, comfortable, and heard during counselling sessions and are dedicated to affirming respect, compassion, and acceptance for all. The DGCCD promotes the psychological health of students and the campus community through preventive programming, clinical interventions and professional consultations.

History of the Directorate

The Directorate of Guidance, Counselling and Career Development of Lagos State University of Education came into existence in July, 2023 after two Colleges of Education in Lagos State, Nigeria (Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education and Michael Otedola College of Primary Education) were transmuted into a University of Education.

Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED)

The Directorate of G & C AOCOED was established in April 2014. Dr. (Mrs.) J.I Odigie of the Department of Educational Psychology, Guidance and Counselling was appointed as the pioneer Director of the Directorate in April 2014.

The Directorate from onset operates and offers high standard diagnostic and therapeutic services to meet the needs of students and staff of the Legacy College (Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education), Directorate of Programmes in the College (Full and Part-Time) and neighborhood schools (Primary and Secondary Schools) as regard their psycho-social and cognitive health care.

On July 13th 2017, the pioneer Director, Dr. (Mrs.) J.I. Odigie inaugurated Counselling Committee which consists of Consultant Committee (Counselling psychologists, Special Educationists, Evaluation and test Administrators who have Ph.D and lecturers who are in the Department of Educational psychology, Guidance and Counselling) under the Chairmanship of the Director of the Directorate and Research and Development Committee.

Michael Otedola College of Primary Education (MOCPED)

An Ad-Hoc Committee on the establishment of a Counselling Centre for Michael Otedola College of Primary Education (MOCPED) headed by Dr. Mrs. Asikhia Olubusayo was constituted in July 2012 by the College Management to come up with a blueprint on the establishment of a counselling centre in the College.

Based on the report of the Ad-Hoc Committee, a Counselling Unit was created in January, 2013 and Dr. Adeyemi, S.V became the pioneer Counsellor of the College. Dr. Adeyemi worked tirelessly with a Counselling Committee that was immediately set up by the then Provost (Prof. Olu Akeusola). Some of the Guidance and Counselling activities carried out by the Counselling Committee were bi-monthly interactive sessions with the students, individual and group counseling, information and orientation services.

In September 2020, Dr. Asikhia Olubusayo was appointed as the new College Counsellor and she immediately wrote a proposal for the Counselling Unit to be upgraded into a Centre based on the recommendations of the 2018 NCCE minimum standards.

By July, 2022 after the two Colleges were transmuted into a university, Dr Asikhia Olubusayo was made the pioneer Director of the Directorate of Guidance, Counselling and Career Development.
