The Centre for Diploma Programmes, Hospitality and Tourism Management Department of Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) successfully organized a practical session for its Year Two students at Oloto Hall. This initiative aligns with the University’s commitment to combining classroom learning with hands-on field experience, enabling students to translate theory into practice.

The event held on Saturday 31st January, 2026 provided students with the opportunity to showcase their culinary skills, presenting a variety of dishes to guests, notable personalities, and the public. The programme underscored the department’s focus on practical skill acquisition and professional competence in the hospitality and tourism sector.

In his welcome address, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Shittu M.A., who was representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, emphasized that the programme’s primary objective was to equip students with practical skills that will enhance their employability and professional readiness. He encouraged the students not to underestimate their diploma qualifications, stressing that expertise and competence are key drivers of success. He congratulated the students for their outstanding performances and urged them to continue demonstrating their talents to the wider public.

Delivering her own remarks, the part-time Coordinator of the department Dr. Dejo Titilayo explained the purpose of the session, highlighting culinary arts as a discipline that encompasses food preparation, cooking, and presentation. She also discussed gastronomy as the scientific, cultural, and intellectual study of food, underscoring the importance of understanding both the artistry and science behind culinary practices.

During the assessment session, Professor Shittu personally evaluated the students’ dishes and engaged them with thought-provoking questions to gauge their understanding and proficiency. Parents in attendance commended the initiative, noting visible improvements and the practical skills their children had developed since joining the programme.

Overwhelmed by the quality of the presentations, Professor Shittu openly expressed his satisfaction and encouraged students to aim for even higher standards of excellence in future exercises. In his closing remarks, he urged external assessors to conduct a thorough and objective evaluation, highlighting both areas of strength and opportunities for improvement. He stressed that constructive feedback is essential for the continuous development and motivation of the students.

The practical session was a resounding success, reflecting LASUED’s ongoing commitment to hands-on learning, skill development, and preparing graduates who are ready to meet the demands of the hospitality and tourism industry. However, the concluding part of the programme is to be held on Saturday 7th February 2026 at the same venue.
