The Department of Fine and Applied Arts at The Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Oto/Ijanikin, on Tuesday, 21st July 2026, displayed the creative talent and artistic competence of its students during a practical assessment focused on painting. The event, organised for final-year students, highlighted their ability to turn theoretical knowledge into expressive visual work, demonstrating originality, critical thinking, and technical skill across different painting specialisations.
The assessment included courses such as FAP 421 (Mixed-Media Painting), where students experimented by combining unusual materials with traditional techniques to craft engaging visual stories. Focus was on visual storytelling, arrangement of space, and innovative use of materials, encouraging students to push creative limits. In FAP 423 (Advanced Composition in Painting), students showed a solid understanding of compositional principles, including balance, rhythm, focal points, and spatial illusion, creating pieces that display deliberate design and clear concepts.
Additionally, students enrolled in FAP 422 (Life Painting and Portraiture II) demonstrated refined skills in depicting the human form with accuracy and sensitivity. Through the use of light, shadow, and colour, they effectively expressed depth, shape, and emotion, while capturing gestures, postures, and personal expression. The practical session resulted in a diverse collection of work showing technical progress, creative experimentation, and a mature engagement with both contemporary and traditional painting techniques.
This practical assessment highlights LASUED’s dedication to developing well-rounded artists equipped with both creative vision and technical competence. It also underscores the department’s goal of encouraging innovation, discipline, and professional readiness among students. As the graduating class prepares to move into the wider art and creative scene, the quality of work produced during this exercise strongly indicates their readiness to make meaningful contributions to the evolving world of visual arts.
