The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) paid a courtesy visit to the Management of Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) on Tuesday, 21st July, 2026, to discuss issues affecting students, particularly the proposed establishment of a Students' Union in the University.
The delegation was received by the Vice Chancellor, LASUED, Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, at the Vice Chancellor's Office.
Welcoming the delegation, the Vice Chancellor gave a brief history of the University, noting that LASUED has successfully produced its first set of graduating students and is preparing for its maiden convocation ceremony. She reaffirmed the University's commitment to students' welfare, stressing that the Management remains responsive to students' genuine needs and aspirations.
Delivering his remarks, the NANS General Secretary, Comrade Uthman Oladimeji, commended the University Management for its commitment to maintaining a disciplined, safe, and conducive learning environment, as well as its zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment. He also specially appreciated the Vice-Chancellor and her team for the employment opportunities extended to some alumni of the university’s legacy college who are members of the Student National Association.
During the interactive session, the General Secretary presented the Association's key requests, including the establishment of a Students' Union in LASUED and the provision of office space for the proposed Students' Union secretariat, while soliciting more employment opportunities for students where applicable.
Speaking further, the Chief of Staff of NANS, Comrade Adegboyega Adeboye, urged students to stay away from social vices such as drug abuse, cultism, and other forms of misconduct.
He highlighted the Association's collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), explaining that the partnerships are aimed at safeguarding campuses and promoting responsible conduct among students rather than creating fear.
In her response, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, commended the NANS delegation for their maturity, decorum, and constructive engagement, noting that they had projected a positive image of the Nigerian student body.
She thanked the delegation for the visit and assured them that the requests presented would receive due consideration by the University Management. She added that, after the necessary consultations, Management would communicate its position to the Association.
The Vice Chancellor further urged students to channel their concerns through NANS rather than resorting to the dissemination of misleading or inappropriate information on social media.
Interestingly, NANS decorated Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye as an ambassador against social vices in recognition of her zero-tolerance stance on social vices, marking the highlight of the courtesy visit.
